Wasim,
I have done extensive research on medication waste in Canada. We have data
from two major cleanup campaigns in two major centers in Canada (population
120,000 and 600,000). The data is very interesting.
Key points from our last paper:
- The cost of Maintenance medication waste exceeds that of acute medication
- As we increased the day supply for cardiovascular medication the
percentage returned/percentage dispensed increased
- Cost of Cardiovascular medication returned far exceeded any other class
- We estimate the cost of medication waste in Canada to exceed 113 million.
I have the full study published in the Canadian Pharmacist's Journal May
1997 vol 130 no 4, and I will post the preliminary report from the second
campaign to you privately if you are interested.
I hope this helps and if you would like a copy of the forms we used for
collection and tips please feel free to email me directly.
Good luck,
Michael Boivin
