"Adverse effects" history

I have a vague recollection of having read somewhere that the notion  
of "adverse / side effects [of medicines]" did not not occur until  
around 1880, but canīt remember where I saw it nor who made the  
statement.
Can anyone supply more solid information on the birth of the ADR  
concept?
